Antioxidant, Anti-Oral Cancer, and Antimicrobial Activity of Medicinal Plant Extracts: Development of Mouthrinse Formulations

Nowadays, there is growing interest in using medicinal plants as antimicrobial agents to treat microbial infections the oral cavity. This study was aimed evaluate phytochemical properties, anti-oral cancer and activity against C. albicans some potential lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei Lactobacillus plantarum). Plant extracts including Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon), Acorus calamus (sweet flag), Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle), Zingiber officinale (ginger) Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal) were tested used formulate mouthrinses for health care. Cinnamon extract possessed highest phenolic, flavonoid tannin content, antioxidant (1,152.58 mg ascorbic equivalent/g by phosphomolybdenum assay 39.64 % nitric oxide radical scavenging activity), while roselle had total alkaloids. Only lesser galangal displayed with 97.83 cytotoxicity. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed presence of galangin kaempferide rhizome extract. The cinnamon showed strongest inhibitory Candida (4 mg/mL MIC). (24 mg/mL) cinnamaldehyde (0.08 mol/L) exhibited best killing effect cellular protein leakage albicans.
